Our Butterfly Garden
Last fall 4th graders prepared the garden site using the lasagna composting method. Instead of digging up the grass, we laid down layers of cardboard, newspaper, straw, and mulch. Over the winter, the lasagna layers will decompose creating a nutrient-rich soil for plants.
This winter students learned about the elements of a butterfly garden. They became landscape architects for a day and designed plans for the garden. Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners used their expertise and the students' garden design to produce a final garden plan. On May 30th the Owasco 4th grade students, Cornell Cooperative Extension Educators and Master Gardeners gathered together and planted the butterfly garden. Today, the garden holds hundreds of different plants that attract butterflies, insects, animals and humans. Stop by today and see how conservation can take place in small places!
