Suffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center

Recognizing that young people need to understand Long Island’s marine environment, since they will one day inherit it and need to protect it, the Suffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center offers educational programs to almost 15,000 youngsters each year. Another 400 attend Summer Fun Days at the marine center and learn to appreciate the marine life populating Peconic Bay and the nearby salt marsh.

Our Marine Educators are also dedicated to Suffolk County schools. During the school year educators travel all over Suffolk County teaching students about the unique marine environment that makes up Long Island. Classes are designed to teach students about specific aspects of the marine environment. A class called Discovery Tank, for grades K-8, teaches students how to put together an actual salt water aquarium system that is left in the classroom on permanent display.
