Criteria for Nominations for County Medals
Project Area Description
Achievement For outstanding work in all areas of 4-H, building character, leadership and citizenship.
Aerospace Acquisition of knowledge and skills including safety, flight, the earth’s atmosphere and space.
Agriculture Strength in 4-H agricultural projects and activities as well as practice of up-to-date methods and improved farming practices.
Beef Clear understanding of beef cattle breeding, production and management practices and acquired skills in executing them by owning, caring for and keeping records of one or more head of beef. Also, for demonstrating sound beef breeding, feeding and management practices on the home, farm and in the community.
Childcare Demonstrated knowledge of different development stages of child growth and development. Must have assembled a babysitter’s kit with age appropriate toys.
Citizenship For a 4-H member who has shown a cooperative attitude and awareness that an effective citizen needs to participate in club work and other community interests. This includes learning about the role as citizen in the state, nation and world. Respects rights of others and their property. Relates well to others: family, peers and community.
Clothing Demonstrated self-confidence and poise through developing skills in choosing, making and caring for her/his clothing. Clothing construction is emphasized.
Dairy Clear understanding of dairy production through the ownership and care of one or more dairy animals. This includes an understanding of dairy animal selection, feeding, marketing, production, raising and breeding.
Dog Care & Training Primary responsibility for the care and training of a dog including health, grooming, feeding and obedience training.
Electric Demonstrated knowledge of electricity and proper use and care of electrical equipment. This includes making electrical items, repairing small appliances, working with electronics as well as energy conservation and awareness.
Entomology Outstanding project work in insect identification and control. (includes Bees)
Fashion Revue Active participation in county Clothing Revue and in the NYS Fair Clothing Revue.
Food & Nutrition Knowledge and practice in selecting food for a balanced diet as well as skills in planning, preparing, purchasing and serving attractive, nutritious meals and snacks.
Health Successful completion of a standard first aid course. Adoption of desirable personal health practices an effort to share knowledge to improve health of family and community.
Horse Experience in horseback riding as a healthy and wholesome form of recreation, learned skills in horsemanship, proven sportsmanship, support of community horse projects and activities and study of horse physiology, veterinary needs, equipment and show management.
Horticulture Demonstrated knowledge of up-to-date techniques in the home garden production of fruits, flowers and/or vegetables.
Leadership Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to lead and help others; must be self-starters who have developed self-confidence through teen leadership and public presentations. Active participation in 4-H and in the community through serving as an officer, working on committees, and working in junior leadership roles are important components for this award.

Petroleum Power

Demonstrated knowledge of the production, selection, use, conservation and handling of fuels, lubricants, and petroleum-powered engines, including tractors and field equipment.
Photography

Demonstrated skills and creative abilities in photography by taking and/or developing pictures in photography project. Can include video.

Poultry

Proven experience in chicken, turkey, or duck projects that place emphasis on management and/or incubation, embryology, etc.

Public Speaking Excellence in skill development and confidence in speaking through the public presentation program. Participated in County Presentations, District Presentations, County and/or State Fair Presentations.
Rabbits/Cavies

Proven knowledge and skill in raising rabbits/cavies. Participation in showing and judging is important.

Sheep Demonstrated knowledge of sheep breeding, production and management practices and skills in executing them by owning, caring for and keeping records on one or more sheep
Swine

Demonstrated knowledge of swine breeding, production and management practices and skill in executing them by owning, caring for and keeping records on one or more head of swine.

Veterinary Science Strong applied knowledge of veterinary science
Wood Science Strong knowledge and skills in woodworking including safety skills in handling tools.
