Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia County is always looking for individuals who are willing and able to volunteer some time and talent to help fulfill its mission of helping the people of Columbia County put knowledge to work.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia County is a unique, cooperative partnership among the federal, state, and county governments, and New York State's land-grant university, Cornell, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the people of Columbia County.
Our product is education, and through the extension of timely, researched-based information from Cornell University and the national land-grant university system, our objective is to help people put knowledge to work.
In Columbia County, our emphasis is presently in the broad areas of production agriculture, horticulture, 4-H youth development, and family and consumer sciences.
Local residents comprise our Association's elected leadership, which includes a 14-member Board of Directors and the 9 to 11 member Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, and 4-H program committees. The Board of Directors is responsible for establishing educational program priorities and setting association policies, which include financial, personnel, affirmative action, and office management. The elected program committee members are responsible for helping identify program needs, assisting staff in developing and delivering the appropriate educational programs and activities, and in conducting an evaluation and impact. Additionally, dozens of other local residents serve on numerous commodity and subject advisory committees appointed by the elected program committees.
In addition to the volunteer leadership positions described above, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia County also depends on numerous other volunteers to serve in various capacities and positions. Some of these include: evaluators for 4-H projects and events, adult chaperones for youth activities, 4-H and Cloverbud club leaders, grant writing, public relations and marketing, fund-raising and development, office and clerical assistance, lawn and yard work, basic carpentry or construction work, teaching specific topics of interest, putting kits together, serving as project leaders, Master Gardeners, and the like.
