High Tunnels Open Houses
High tunnels are unheated greenhouses that can help market gardeners extend their growing season and as a result improve profitability.  They extend the season by protecting crops from frost and reduce disease problems by keeping the rain off of the crops.  A series of free open houses is being held for the public and growers to see how well these structures work.  All of the open houses will be on Sunday September 21.  The first open house is at Bonesteel’s Garden Center (on Rte 11 west of Malone) from 11:00am-12:30pm.  The second open house is at Campbell’s Greenhouse (on Cringle Rd just north of Bucks Corners Rd in Saranac) from 1:30pm-3:00pm.  The third open house is from 4:00-5:30pm at Rehoboth Homestead (66 Jabez Allen Rd in Peru, just south off Bear Swamp Rd).  Dr. Chris Wien, from Cornell University, will be a guest speaker at all three open houses.  For more information, call the office at 561-7450.
